Google sends fewer clicks now. Here is how a business website should adapt
Chartbeat measured Google Search referrals to news and media sites falling by 40.2% between July 2025 and July 2026, as AI Overviews and AI Mode answer more questions on the results page itself. Google says no special markup is needed to appear in its AI features. Here is what the numbers measure, what Google changed this year, and what still earns a visit.
In short
- Search still sends visits, but fewer per query: people click a normal result less often when an AI Overview is on the page.
- Google says there is no special schema, file or markup for AI features. A page needs to be indexed and eligible for a snippet.
- Blocking Google-Extended does not remove a site from Search or from AI Overviews; it covers Gemini training and grounding.
- Sites that hold their traffic have a reason to visit: real prices, original data, tools, bookings and a list of readers they own.
What the numbers actually measure
Headlines about AI search quote very different figures, because they measure different things. Three are worth knowing, along with what each one counts.
The Chartbeat number comes from its 2026 Publisher Playbook, as reported by Android Headlines, and covers a network made up mostly of news organisations. Pew Research Center's study tracked the real browsing of 900 US adults in March 2025, across 68,879 Google searches; 18% of those searches showed an AI summary. It is about what people do on one results page, not about a site's total traffic.
100 visits, no AI summary
15 clicked a result
100 visits, with an AI summary
8 clicked a result, 1 clicked inside the summary
What changed on the results page
An AI Overview sits above the classic results and answers the question in a paragraph, with a handful of cited links. AI Mode goes further and turns the whole search into a conversation. For a question with a short answer, the visit that used to land on your page often ends on Google's. Compare the two pages below.
A results page on a phone
October to February is the most comfortable season, with cool mornings for the ruins and boulders.
Google has changed these features through the year in ways that send some traffic back. In May 2026 it added a Further Exploration section of links at the end of AI Overviews, site names on hover for links on desktop, labels for links from news sources a person subscribes to, and previews from forums and social posts, according to The Next Web. In October, AFP reported that Google would show contextual links more often and higher up, roll its link carousel of headline cards out worldwide, and favour sites a person has marked as preferred sources.
What Google says to do
Google's guidance for site owners is short, and its most useful line is a negative: there are no additional requirements and no special optimisations for AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page needs to be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet. Beyond that, Google points to the basics it has always asked for.
- Let Googlebot crawl the page, in robots.txt and in any CDN or hosting firewall in front of it.
- Link to important pages from other pages on your site, so they can be found.
- Keep the important content in text, and give visitors a good page experience.
- Keep Merchant Center and Business Profile information up to date if you sell or serve locally.
- Make sure any structured data matches what is visible on the page.
Clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted in Search Console's Performance report, under the Web search type, mixed in with everything else. Test four common beliefs against Google's own documentation:
What still earns the visit
The same Chartbeat data has a second story in it. Over two years, the share of pageviews that came from Google Search fell from 9% to 5%, while direct visits and private sharing grew. People who already know a site keep coming back.
My read, for a business site rather than a newspaper: an AI summary can take over the question, but it cannot take over the transaction or the relationship. Build the pages that a summary has to send people to.
Pages that finish a task
Booking, buying, quoting, checking stock or availability. A summary can point at them; it cannot replace them.
Things only you know
Your prices, your data, your photos, real cases from your work. Original material is what gets cited.
A list you own
Email, RSS, WhatsApp updates, returning customers. Direct visits are the share that grew.

From the studio
Things I have designed and built on the platform this article is about.
Do I need special markup to appear in AI Overviews?
No. Google says there are no additional requirements or special optimisations for AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special schema.org markup or AI text files. A page needs to be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet.
Does blocking Google-Extended remove my site from AI Overviews?
No. Google-Extended controls whether content may be used to train Gemini models and for grounding in Gemini Apps and Vertex AI. Google says it does not affect a site's inclusion in Google Search.
Can I see AI Overview traffic in Search Console?
Yes. Google includes clicks and impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode in the Search Console Performance report, under the Web search type. They are not reported separately.
How much less do people click when there is an AI Overview?
In Pew Research Center's 2025 study of real searches, people clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits to a results page with an AI summary, against 15% without one. Only 1% clicked a link inside the summary.
How can I limit what Google shows from my pages?
Use the snippet controls Google documents for Search: nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet, or noindex to keep a page out entirely. Robots.txt rules for Googlebot control crawling.
