Your next customer might be an AI agent. Here is what it reads in your store
Shopify and Google co-developed the Universal Commerce Protocol so that AI agents can search a store's catalog, build a cart and check out on a shopper's behalf. It is already behind shopping in Microsoft Copilot. Here is what the protocol does, what it means for your store, and the product data an agent actually reads.
In short
- UCP is an open standard for connecting stores to AI agents: catalog search, carts, identity linking, checkout and order management.
- Shopify says shoppers in Microsoft Copilot can already buy in the chat and pay with Shop Pay, powered by UCP.
- You stay the merchant of record. The agent finds and fills the cart; your checkout and policies still apply.
- Agents can only recommend what they can read, so complete titles, variants, stock, alt text and policies matter more than ever.
From the search box to the chat window
A growing share of shopping starts with a sentence typed to an assistant rather than a query typed into a search box. "A rain jacket under 6,000 rupees, in medium, that will arrive before Friday." An assistant that can only read web pages answers that with links. One that can talk to stores answers it with a product, a price and a cart.
Shopify has been building for the second kind. Its Winter '26 Edition in December 2025 introduced Agentic Storefronts: tools in every merchant's admin to make products discoverable in AI conversations, with products syndicated to AI channels after a one-time setup. The piece that makes that work across companies is a protocol.
What the Universal Commerce Protocol does
The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) is an open standard for connecting commerce with AI agents, co-developed by Shopify and Google. The project's own site lists retailers and platforms such as Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart among the co-developers for shopping. Instead of every assistant building a custom integration with every store, an agent that speaks UCP can shop any store that does. Follow one order through it.
- 00
A shopper asks in plain words. No store name, no keywords that match your product titles, just what they need.
- 01
Catalog search and lookup. The agent searches catalogs and gets back structured products: titles, prices, variants and whether each one is in stock.
- 02
Cart building. It puts the right variant in a cart, which can hold several items and can be handed to the store's own site at any point.
- 03
Identity linking. With the shopper's permission, the agent links their account so saved details can be used without retyping them.
- 04
Checkout. A trusted agent can complete the checkout itself. Otherwise it hands the shopper to your checkout page to finish, with the cart already filled.
- 05
Order management. Updates flow back, so the shopper can ask the same assistant where the order is.
Through all of it, you remain the merchant of record. The agent finds and fills; your prices, stock, shipping rules, policies and checkout still decide what is sold and how.
Where it already works
Shopify states that shopping in Microsoft Copilot is powered by UCP, and that customers can buy directly in the chat and pay with Shop Pay. Products also reach the Shop app and other AI channels through Shopify Catalog, which standardises and enriches product data from across Shopify, infers categories and attributes, and groups listings that are the same product. Businesses that do not run on Shopify can sync their products into the catalog too.
Not every assistant announcement is about checkout. Shopify has not published one list of every AI channel where a purchase completes in the chat, so treat third-party claims about specific assistants with care, and check your admin's Agentic Storefronts settings for the channels your store is actually connected to.
What an agent actually reads in your store
A person forgives a vague product title because they can see the photo. An agent cannot recommend what it cannot read. Switch the card below to see a product the way an agent receives it, and where a typical listing leaves gaps.
One product, two readers
- title
- Trail Shell Present, but says nothing about rain
- description
- "Our best seller." No material, no waterproof rating
- category
- Apparel > Outerwear > Rain jackets Matches the question
- price
- 549900 INR In minor units, so 5,499.00
- variants
- S, M, L with SKU and stock M is in stock
- image alt text
- empty The photo is invisible to it
- refund policy
- missing link It cannot answer "can I return it?"
The fix is unglamorous and it is the same work that makes a listing better for people. Shopify's Spring '26 Edition also added a place to record mandatory product warnings, shown on your store and in AI channels, and variant-level control over which channels each variant is published to.

From the studio
Things I have designed and built on the platform this article is about.
What is the Universal Commerce Protocol?
UCP is an open standard for integrating commerce with AI agents, co-developed by Shopify and Google. It covers catalog search and lookup, cart building, identity linking, checkout and order management, so an agent can shop a store in a structured way.
Which AI assistants can buy from Shopify stores?
Shopify states that shopping in Microsoft Copilot is powered by UCP and that customers can buy in the chat with Shop Pay. Shopify also syndicates products to the Shop app and to other AI channels through Shopify Catalog.
Who is the merchant of record when an agent buys?
You are. UCP keeps the store as the merchant of record, so your prices, policies and checkout rules still apply.
Do I need a developer to be ready for agents?
Not for the basics. Agentic Storefronts are set up in the Shopify admin. What helps most is clean product data: clear titles and descriptions, variants with SKUs and stock, image alt text, categories and up to date shipping and refund policies.
Can a third-party agent complete checkout on its own?
Only trusted agents can complete checkouts directly through Checkout MCP. Under general access the agent builds the checkout and hands the shopper to the store's own checkout page to finish.
